Why Manchester City should revive their interest in Ruben Dias

Back in April, Portuguese outlet Record (h/t Daily Star) suggested that Manchester City were leading the race to sign Ruben Dias from Benfica along with Spanish giants Barcelona.

Dias, 23, rose through the ranks of Benfica’s youth system and made his breakthrough with the club’s senior team in the 2017/18 season. Since then, he has gone on to become an integral member of the team. He helped the club lift the Portuguese title last season and the Portuguese Super Cup this term.

Since making his debut for Portugal in March 2018, Dias has been a regular member of the national team. He also helped his country win the UEFA Nations League title last year. The youngster has received rave reviews for his stellar performances for both club and country, and thus, Manchester City should reignite their interest in securing his services.

City, meanwhile, haven’t been dominant this season as they were in the previous title-winning campaigns. Thursday’s defeat to Chelsea meant, they lost their Premier League title to Liverpool.

While City’s attacking unit has done its best, the defence has failed miserably. And the manager was left with limited options due to injuries to several key players. Thus, Guardiola should bring in reinforcements to their backline if they have to lift themselves up and progress in further campaigns.

Dias could be a future leader in Manchester City’s defence

The Cityzens failed to replace Vincent Kompany, who left the club last summer and Aymeric Laporte was set to take charge at the back. However, the Frenchman fell victim to a knee injury and was out of action for the best part of the 2019/20 campaign.

John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi failed to impress the manager and were left out of the starting XI on several occasions due to their inconsistencies. And Fernandinho was asked to look after the defence. Though the Brazilian did a decent job, that was not enough for them. Therefore, a centre-back is a must in the summer and making a move for Dias would be a wise decision.

The Portuguese international has been in terrific form for Benfica in the last two seasons. He also earned the captain’s armband from his manager for his impressive performances.

He has helped his side keep 15 clean sheets in 28 league games this season. Benfica have conceded just 21 goals this term, boasting the second-best defensive record in the league and it is partly down to Dias’ rock solid displays.

Hence, the 23-year-old would be a valuable addition to Guardiola’s squad, given his recent form. Given his age, the Portuguese can develop a strong partnership with Laporte at the heart of City’s defence for years to come.

Verdict

At 23, Dias already has plenty of experience at a higher level. If he is able to replicate his current good form, he could be a future leader for City. He would also provide them with much-needed depth at the back. Thus, they should revive their interest in the Portuguese international this summer.
