Why Manchester City should keep hold of Sergio Aguero amidst interest

According to Calciomercato (h/t Daily Mail), Inter Milan are plotting a summer swoop for Manchester City ace Sergio Aguero in the summer. The report suggests that Inter are willing to use Milan Skriniar as a makeweight for the deal to materialize.

Aguero, 32, has just one year left on his contract at Etihad and Inter are hoping to take utilise his current situation. The Italian giants are lining up a move for Aguero as a replacement for goalscoring ace Lautaro Martinez, who has been linked with an exit from the club, according to Alfredo Pedulla (h/t Manchester Evening News).

The Argentine stalwart started his career with Independiente’s youth system and moved to Spain with Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2006 where he came to the limelight. In five years with the Spanish outfit, he racked up 100 goals in 230 games before joining Manchester City in the summer of 2011.

Aguero – An irreplaceable legend for Manchester City

In his time in England, apart from helping Manchester City win several trophies, including 4 Premier League titles, he has gone on to establish himself as one of the greatest strikers in the league. He is currently the fourth-highest goalscorer in England’s top-flight football and has also overtaken Alan Shearer for the most number of hat-tricks in the league.

The former Atletico Madrid man has managed 370 appearances for the Cityzens to date and has scored 254 goals, becoming the club’s all-time leading goalscorer. In the process, he has also racked up 72 assists so far.

City, meanwhile, haven’t had the best of the seasons as they have failed to defend the league title. They have been left far behind Liverpool, who were crowned as the new champions a few days back. But Aguero has continued to do what he does best, scoring 16 goals 24 league games.

For the sixth season running, Aguero has been Manchester City’s top goalscorer in the league, including the current campaign. Second choice striker Gabriel Jesus has managed just 10 goals so far. Apart from them, City boss Pep Guardiola has no one available at his disposal.

Despite being 32, the Argentine forward has kept going strong. Thus, City must hold on to him. Given the finances impacted by the pandemic, the English outfit may not be able to bring in a world-class replacement for Aguero if they decide to sell him.

Hence, keeping hold of him would make sense for the club and they should attempt to block any exit for their star striker.

Verdict

Manchester City are already set to lose one of their senior figures in David Silva this summer and allowing Aguero to leave would not be ideal. He is, by far, City’s greatest striker and at 32, the Argentine international has got the energy to do well at the highest level. Therefore, they should do everything to keep the striker at Etihad for the next few seasons.
