Why Mady Camara to Newcastle United would bolster their midfield

As per Greek media (h/t The Shields Gazette), Newcastle United are interested in signing Olympiacos midfielder Mady Camara when the transfer window commences.

Camara, 23, came through the ranks of AS Kaloum and Santoba FC’s youth system before joining AC Ajaccio in the summer of 2016. In two years with the Ligue 2 outfit, he made 49 appearances and developed himself before joining Olympiacos.

Since joining the Greek outfit, the Guinea international has been in sensational form. And his performances have garnered attention from several Premier League clubs including Sheffield United, as per the report.

He has gone on to make 80 appearances for the Greek giants and has also been handed 13 caps for his national team. He is one of the most exciting defensive midfielders in Europe.

Camara could bring stability to their midfield

One key area Bruce should focus on strengthening is the midfield. The Magpies have a plethora of attack-minded midfielders. But jack Colback and Matty Longstaff are the only two defensive midfielders available at the manager’s disposal.

However, Colback is set to leave the club in the summer and Longstaff, whose contract is due to expire at the end of the season, hasn’t yet extended his contract with the club. And, if both of them leave, the numbers in the midfield would be reduced. Thus, a defensive midfielder is a must in the upcoming transfer window.

In that regard, signing Camara would be a boost for the club. The Guinean international has been impressive this term. He has featured in 22 games, scoring 2 goals and providing 1 assist. A defensive midfielder by trade, Camara is also capable of playing in an advanced role.

He could be a perfect replacement for Colback and Longstaff if they leave. He has proved his worth for Olympiacos and could be a valuable addition to Bruce’s squad, given his recent successful form. And he has also helped his side win the Greek league title for the first time in three years.

Verdict

With a lack of numbers in the deep-lying role, Newcastle are in need of defensive midfielders in their ranks. And Camara could provide them with much-needed depth. And he could bring stability to their midfield if he is able to continue with the fine form. Thus, they should make a move for the former Ajaccio man this summer.
