Why Liverpool should go all out for Manchester United target Jadon Sancho

According to reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano (h/t Mirror), Jadon Sancho could be on the move next summer and Liverpool are a likely destination for the long-term Manchester United target.

The Dortmund forward was close to leaving the club last summer but Dortmund held firm on their valuation of the player. Manchester United were trying to pursue Sancho and could again return for him. However, Romano believes that the race to sign Sancho will be open next season.

Sancho is a quality player

A youth product of Manchester City’s academy, in 2017 Sancho decided to move abroad in search of first-team football, something that was clearly impossible at Man City given the stock of players they had at the time. The winger went on to join Borussia Dortmund.

Three years down the line, no one can say that he has made the wrong decision. He has gone from an ambitious teenager to one of the best right-wingers in the game. His stats for Dortmund are rather mind-boggling. The tricky winger has made 117 appearances for the club so far, scoring 38 goals and 52 assists (source – Transfermarkt).

While he may have started the season slowly, which former manager Lucien Favre admitted was due to the transfer speculation, the forward has returned to his best form in recent weeks. That will surely come as good news to his suitors who are likely to pursue him come next season.

Liverpool need Sancho as a contingency plan in case Salah leaves

Even a few months ago it would have seemed absurd to link an established forward like Sancho to a settled team like Liverpool. However, with recent developments with Mo Salah’s situation at the club, talk of a possible move for Sancho is gathering steam.

It is being said that Salah was unhappy about being snubbed for the captaincy role and subsequently putting his future up in the air regarding a transfer to Real Madrid or Barcelona (source – The Sun).

A possible departure of the Egyptian would be a serious hammer blow to Liverpool. There are few forwards who have scored and assisted at such a blistering rate like the former Roma man. Among those few names, there is a certain Jadon Sancho.

A like-to-like replacement, Sancho can be a huge signing for Liverpool in the event Salah does leave. While he may not boast of a better goalscoring record than the Egyptian, one needs to remember that he is just 20 years of age and can blossom into one of the finest forwards in the coming years.

Liverpool should try to steal a march on their rivals in the race for Sancho. It would be the ultimate swoop if they can prise him away from under the noses of Manchester United, who have chased him for so long. Sancho may not have been a requirement for Liverpool earlier but he could soon turn out to be one if the Salah situation goes south.
