Why Leeds United should revive their interest in Curtis Jones

Back in December, Goal (h/t Leeds Live) suggested that Leeds United were keen on signing Liverpool youngster Curtis Jones in the January transfer window. However, a deal didn’t materialize and the midfielder stayed put at Anfield.

Jones, 19 is a product of Liverpool’s youth academy and was promoted to the U-23 squad in the summer of 2018. Since then, he has gone on to make 33 appearances, scoring 13 goals and providing 7 assists. He is one of the best young talents in the country and has also made his debut for the senior setup.

The teenager has been in terrific form in the last two campaigns and his impressive performances had also attracted the attention of Swansea City, as per the report. Thus, Leeds United should once again try their luck and get their hands on Jones in the summer transfer window.

The Whites, meanwhile, have been brilliant under Marcelo Bielsa this term. They were unlucky to miss out on getting promoted to the top flight last summer. However, they have hit top form and are just a few games away from getting promoted to the top flight after 16 years..

As they are on the cusp of moving to the top flight, the manager should start focusing on reinforcing the team for the next campaign.

Jones could be an influential figure in midfield for Leeds

One area where Bielsa should focus on strengthening is the midfield. Adam Forshaw, Mateusz Klich and Pablo Hernandez are the only three main attack-minded midfielders in the squad. And they have been brilliant in the past two campaigns.

But the managers should look to add depth of they are to sustain and prolong in the top flight. Hernandez is already 35 and reaching the rear end of his career. Thus, a midfielder is a must in the summer.

In that regard, Jones would be a viable option for the Whites. The English youngster has racked up 14 goals and 6 assists for the Reds’ U23 side in 18 games this season. He has also featured for the senior team and put in a remarkable performance against Arsenal in the EFL Cup and against Everton in the FA Cup earlier in the campaign.

The 19-year-old would be a terrific addition to Bielsa’s squad, given his recent form. He would add depth, whilst also bringing healthy competition to the squad. He has the potential to succeed at a higher level if he is given the right opportunities.
