Why Leeds United should part ways with Dutch flop Jay-Roy Grot

According to claims from Dutch outlet AD (h/t Yorkshire Evening Post), out-of-favour Leeds United winger Jay-Roy Grot has emerged as a potential target for Eredivisie club ADO Den Haag. 

However, it has been claimed that the Dutch club can’t sign the 22-year-old on loan this month and an agreement would need to be reached for Leeds to terminate his contract to facilitate a departure from Elland Road. Grot’s deal in West Yorkshire is due to expire at the end of the season, thus making a free transfer next summer a more plausible possibility. 

Leeds United clearly haven’t managed to get the best out of Jay-Roy Grot. The Dutch starlet has only been restricted to appearances for the U-23 side this term after failing to secure a loan move away from West Yorkshire. \

Grot hasn’t made a competitive appearance for the Whites since the end of the 2017-18 season, which shows that he hasn’t been anywhere close to breaking into Bielsa’s plans. 

Leeds should ideally look to recoup whatever fee they can by cashing in on Grot this month rather than lose him for free in the summer. However, that looks really difficult considering that the winger’s career has been in a downward spiral over the past couple of years. With clubs across the continent facing the financial ramifications of the pandemic, the Whites face a tricky situation over the player’s future.

Having said that, it would still make sense for Leeds to terminate his contract and let him depart this month. That would be a fair settlement for both parties. It would help Bielsa cut down his wage bills. As for the Dutchman, he desperately needs a move back to his homeland to kickstart his career after struggling for opportunities at Elland Road.

Verdict

Leeds need to make room for new arrivals by offloading the outcasts and Jay-Roy Grot certainly falls in that bracket. The 22-year-old still has plenty of room for development but his future at the club looks bleak, at least, as long as Bielsa is in charge. That said, they should sanction an exit for the player in January even if it means terminating his contract.
