Why Leeds United should make a move for Emiliano Buendia

According to Read Norwich (h/t Leeds Live), Leeds United have made an enquiry for Norwich City star Emiliano Buendia ahead of the summer transfer window.

Buendia, 23, came through the ranks of Getafe’s youth system. He was promoted to the club’s senior setup in the summer of 2015. He made his breakthrough in 2015/16 and was later sent on loan to Cultural Leonesa.

After an impressive season with the second-tier club, where he scored 6 goals and provided 12 assists in 40 league games, he was signed by Norwich City in the summer of 2018.

Since his arrival at Carrow Road, the Argentine has impressed heavily. Last season, he racked up 8 goals and 12 assists in the Championship and played a key role in the Canaries’ promotion to the top flight. He has impressed this season also despite the club languishing at the bottom of the Premier League table.

Leeds, meanwhile, have endured a brilliant campaign so far under the management of Marcelo Bielsa. A loss to Cardiff City in their first game after the break has put them in the 2nd position behind fellow promotion chasers West Brom.

However, they are on the cusp of getting promoted to the top flight after a 16-year absence for the Premier League. And thus, the manager should strengthen the squad if they are to sustain and prolong in the first division.

Buendia could be a reliable member in Leeds’ attack

One major concern for the manager would be the lack of numbers in the wide areas. Helder Costa and Jack Harrison are the two main wingers available at the manager’s disposal. Ian Poveda, who was brought in during the winter window, has featured in just one game.

Costa and Harrison are on loan from Wolves and Manchester City respectively. While the former will be joining the Whites on a permanent basis this summer, Harrison could be on his way back to his parent club. He has racked up 5 goals and 7 assists so far and Leeds could miss out on these numbers if there is no replacement for him in the summer.

In that regard, signing Buendia from Norwich would be a good move by the club. After a commanding display in the Championship last term, the Argentine has continued with the fine form this term, racking up 7 assists in 30 games and has shown his potential at the highest level.

The 23-year-old would, thus, be a valuable addition to Bielsa’s squad if he is able to replicate the same form. And his inclusion would also add depth to the wide areas.

Verdict

Leeds are in dire need of wingers. And Buendia would provide them with the quality on the flanks if they lose out on Jack Harrison. At 23, the former Getafe man has a bright future ahead of him and can become a crucial player under the guidance of Bielsa. Thus, the Whites should lure the Argentine to Elland Road this summer.
