Why Leeds United should go all out to sign Jonathan David

According to The Express, Leeds United have tabled an offer for KAA Gent star Jonathan David in an attempt to sign him this month.

David, 20, spent time at the academies of Ottawa Gloucester SC and Ottawa ISC before joining Belgian outfit Gent’s reserve side in January 2018. He immediately put in impressive performances and got promoted to the senior set-up that summer. Since then, he has gone on to establish himself as one of the best young talents in Europe.

He has also represented Canada 12 times so far at the international stage, scoring 11 goals. His impressive performances have also garnered the attention of several English clubs including Tottenham, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United, as per the report. This shows how highly he is rated and thus, Leeds should make a move for the youngster at the earliest.

After failing in the last moments of the previous campaign, Marcelo Bielsa made sure that his side got promoted to the top-flight this season. Leeds have been outstanding under the management of the Argentine and they have performed extremely well despite a slight blip in form midway through the campaign.

However, most of their key players were on loan and this could spell trouble sooner or later if they don’t bring in permanent reinforcements. Thus, with the summer window open for business, the Whites should add depth to every area and stock up their resources if they are to sustain and prolong in the top-flight.

David – A future leader in Leeds’ attack

For the entire 2019/20 campaign, the Whites carried on with just one main centre-forward in Patrick Bamford. Eddie Nketiah was signed on loan but the Arsenal youngster returned to Emirates last January, leaving Bamford to do the work on his own. The former Chelsea man didn’t disappoint as he managed to bag 16 goals this season.

But Bamford has been the lone striker as there is no competition for him. Tyler Roberts has mainly operated in the No:10 role as an understudy to Pablo Hernandez. Thus, Leeds bringing in an attacker in the summer would do them a world of good.

In that regard, signing David would be a wise decision by the club. The Canadian has been in sensational form in the last two seasons. After racking up 8 goals and 4 assist last season, he took his game to the next level this term, scoring 18 goals and providing 8 assists and helped his side to 2nd position in the Jupiler League standings.

A highly-talented forward, David is capable of operating in both the centre-forward position and in the No:10 role. He could be a replacement for Hernandez, who is already 35 and reaching the twilight of his career. He would bring healthy competition to Bamford up front, whenever needed. His versatility would definitely hand Bielsa a great option to choose.

At 20, he has already shown immense potential and could only get better under the guidance of Bielsa. He would definitely add depth to Leeds’ attacking unit and could provide them with some much-needed goals. And, if he is able to continue with the good form, he could on to be a crucial player for the Yorkshire-based club in the long run.
