According to Sport Bild (h/t The Daily Star), Liverpool are keen on Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Denis Zakaria, but face competition from Manchester United and Bayern Munich for his services.

The 23-year-old’s rise in Germany over the past three seasons hasn’t gone unnoticed, and the report (h/t The Daily Star) adds that Gladbach value their star player at around £45million.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have gone from strength and strength in the last couple of years, conquering Europe and now dominating the Premier League. However, this season, the Reds have been dumped out of the FA Cup and the Champions League already.

Truth be told, Liverpool’s form before the suspension of the Premier League was poor and they need to be strong in every area of the pitch to try and win various trophies. Therefore, the manager should bring in reinforcements and must have a bigger squad for next season.

As far as the Merseyside outfit’s midfield options are concerned, Jurgen Klopp has an array of players. In Jordan Henderson, Georginio Wijnaldum, James Milner, Naby Keita, Fabinho, Adam Lallana and Xherdan Shaqiri, Liverpool are well-stocked in the midfield department. Hence, the addition of a midfielder may not be a priority but such a signing won’t do any harm either.

Henderson, Keita and Fabinho have endured injury-hit campaigns, while Lallana is out of contract at the end of the season. Hence, they should beef up the midfield department ahead of the new campaign and the Reds must go ahead to sign Denis Zakaria.

Zakaria has been impressing in Gladbach colours for the last couple of seasons and is a crucial player in Marco Rose’s side. In all, he has made 96 appearances for the Bundesliga outfit since joining from Young Boys in 2017.

Predominantly a defensive midfielder, the 23-year-old can also operate as a centre-back when required and such versatility could come handy for Klopp. Zakaria would add depth to Liverpool’s squad and will also provide competition within the team.

Verdict

The Switzerland international is just 23 and has a lot of room for improvement. Truly, he can take his game to the next level under the watchful eyes of Klopp.

Thus, Liverpool must face off the competition for Zakaria and lure him to Anfield at the end of the campaign.
