Why Kieran Tierney could solve the left-back issues of Leicester City

According to The Express, Leicester City are planning to rope in Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney to replace Ben Chilwell, who is targeted by several big teams in England.

Tierney, 22, came through the ranks of Celtic’s youth academy. His major breakthrough came in the 2015/16 season and he immediately established himself as a key member for the Hoops. The youngster went on to win five Scottish Premiership titles and three Scottish League cups.

His impressive performances earned him a move to Arsenal last summer but Tierney is yet to make a name for himself in the Premier League. Though he has struggled with injuries, he has done well in the few games he has featured. Thus, Leicester should make a move for the left-back this summer.

The Foxes have been brilliant throughout the campaign. Brendan Rodgers has done a stellar job in his first full season in charge of the club. Though they have been dumped out of the EFL Cup, they are still in the race to reach the finals of the FA Cup and their performance in the league has been outstanding.

Leicester are flying high on the back of the success of star striker Jamie Vardy, who is leading in the goalscoring charts with 19 to his name. Their attacking unit combined with the brilliance from the midfield has been excellent. They are currently 3rd in the league standings and are on the verge of qualifying for the Champions League next season.

The defence has also been at its best with the partnership of Jonny Evans and Caglar Soyuncu flourishing in the heart of the Foxes’ defence. They have conceded just 28 goals so far which is the third-best defensive record in the league.

However, Rodgers should bring in reinforcements to the squad if they are to go further in the Champions League next season. The manager should make sure they have the required depth in every area.

Tierney – A left-back replacement for Chilwell

One area where they should look to bring in fresh faces is the left-back position. Chilwell and Christian Fuchs are the two left-backs available at the manager’s disposal. However, since the Englishman was promoted to the Foxes first-team, he has been the first-choice on the left side of the defence.

He has been brilliant in the last two campaigns and has established himself as one of the hottest properties in English football. He has attracted strong interests from Chelsea and Manchester City and could be on his way of King Power Stadium next season, as per the report. And Fuchs is already 34 and reaching the back end of his career.

In that regard, signing Tierney would be the best option for the club. The Scottish international has gone from strength to strength in the past two years., except for this season as he has been deprived of chance due to injuries. He has the ability to succeed at the top and could be a long-term prospect for Leicester.

Verdict

With Chilwell set to depart, the Foxes would be left without quality at left-back. Tierney could provide them with the much-needed depth. He is capable of doing well at both ends of the pitch. He had already been a perfect player under Rodgers at Celtic and that combination could flourish at Leicester as well.
