Why Josh Hawkes would be a future investment for Burnley

As per TEAMTalk (h/t The Shields Gazette), Burnley are interested in signing Hartlepool United star Josh Hawkes in the summer.

Hawkes, 21, rose through the ranks of Hartlepool United’s youth system and was sent on a three-month loan spell to Dunston UTS FC in November 2017. However, since his arrival, he has been one of the best players in the National League side’s squad. The youngster has been impressive in the last two seasons.

The report also suggests that Hawkes’ eye-catching displays have attracted a lot of interest from several clubs including Premier League rivals Sheffield United and Portuguese side Braga, who are looking to make a shock move for the Stockton-on-Tees-born midfielder. Thus, Burnley should move immediately to secure his signature ahead of the other clubs.

With the pandemic creating a ruckus in the finances of several clubs across the globe, investing in the youth would be the right move for Burnley at the moment. Thus, the Clarets should bring in youngsters for the future and help them in their development process.

Hawkes could be a future midfield star for Burnley

One area the manager should focus on strengthening is the midfield. Jeff Hendrick, Josh Brownhill and Robbie Brady are the main attack-minded midfielders. Both Hendrick and Brady have done a decent job so far despite the latter having played just 14 league games this term.

However, both are already 28 and have just a few more years to perform at a higher level. In that regard, signing a young and in-form midfielder would be a suitable option by the club. And Hartlepool’s Hawkes would be an investment for the future.

The 21-year-old made 29 appearances last season and scored 9 goals for the club. He has already featured in 18 league games this season and has shown potentials of developing into a top-quality performer. He could be used in Burnley’s reserve systems before making it to the top. And his inclusion could also ensure a midfielder for the future.

Verdict

At 21, he is at the right time to join a Premier League side. And at the same time, the Clarets could reap rewards in the future if they invest in special talents now. He could also go on to represent them in the long run if he is able to fulfill his potential. Thus, Burnley should lure the youngster to Turf Moor.
