Why Ivan Toney to Celtic would strengthen their attacking unit

According to Bristol Live, Celtic have been credited with an interest in Peterborough United striker Ivan Toney ahead of the summer transfer window.

Toney, 24, who moved from Scunthorpe United to Peterborough in the summer of 2018, has gone from strength to strength in the past two years. His impressive performances have also attracted interest from several English clubs including Bournemouth, Burnley and Derby County, as per the report.

Meanwhile, the Hoops have dominated the Premiership for the past few years and are on course to lift yet another league title when the season resumes. Neil Lennon’s side are atop the league table, 13 points clear of second-placed Rangers.

Celtic are flying high on the success of their star forward Odsonne Edouard, who has netted 21 goals in the league so far. The Frenchman has led them to victories single-handedly on several occasions and has been one of the best players in the league.

However, the Hoops would not enjoy Edouard’s brilliance next season if he departs the club in the summer as he has been linked with a move to the Premier League in recent times. Apart from the former PSG man, Patryk Klimala and Leigh Griffiths are the only two available strikers at the manager’s disposal.

Klimala, who joined in the winter from the Polish side Jagiellonia Bialystok, has featured in just 2 games under Lennon and is just 21. He is too young to be trusted upon for a whole campaign and Leigh Griffiths, who has scored 9 goals in 21 games is already 29 and has not featured regularly this term.

And if Edouard leaves them in the summer, the Hoops would fall short of options in their attacking unit. Thus, the manager should look to bring in an in-form striker and Peterborough’s Ivan Toney would be a perfect choice.

Toney’s form has been impressive since last season, where he racked up 23 goals and 8 assists across all competitions and has continued the fine form this campaign, scoring 26 goals and providing 7 assists in 39 games for the League One side.

He would definitely bring healthy competition to Lennon’s squad, whilst also adding the much-needed depth if Toney moves to Celtic. The Englishman would be a huge boost to the side given his goalscoring record in the past couple of years.

At 24, he looks set to take a huge stride in his career at a higher level and Celtic need to bolster their squad to continue their dominance. Thus, the Scottish giants should lure Toney to Celtic Park in the summer.
