Why Gerson to Tottenham Hotspur would be a sensible move
Tottenham Hotspur have held talks over a move for Flamengo midfielder Gerson during the January transfer window, according to the Sun.
The 22-year-old became the club’s third most expensive signing ever when he returned to Brazil from AS Roma during the summer, signing a four-year contract with Flamengo after failing to impress during a three-year spell in Serie A.
Gerson has made 35 appearances for Flamengo since joining them earlier in the year and has helped them achieve their most successful season ever – winning the Copa Libertadores, Campeonato Carioca and Brasileirão.
Gerson may have struggled to make an impact at Roma but the Brazilian has been a rejuvenated figure at Flamengo. The 22-year-old midfielder is capable of getting better in the coming years and he would be a good long-term signing for Spurs. Tottenham could do with freshening up their midfield and signing Gerson would be a great start.
Jose Mourinho has made quite the impact at Spurs since his appointment and there is nothing wrong with how his team are attacking. But defensively, they could do with sharpening up since they still look vulnerable in the midfield.
Harry Winks, Eric Dier and Moussa Sissoko are all decent options in the centre of the park but they could do with more quality, especially since summer signing Tanguy Ndombele is yet to hit top gear.
Gerson has been a key cog for Flamengo, who lost a 1-0 heartbreaker on Saturday to Liverpool in the Club World Cup final.
For the dynamics of the team, Gerson is the most important player. It’s like with the great Barcelona team of Ronaldinho and Deco, Ronaldinho was majestic but when Deco was playing well, the team played well.
Gerson performs a similar function for Flamengo now. He’s great at organizing the play and is in top form.
In 23 games this season, he has scored 2 goals and teed up 3 more. He has also averaged 1.3 dribbles and 1.5 tackles per game. With a brilliant passing range backed by the fact that he has a pass success percentage of 88.6%, Gerson would be a worthy investment. [Courtesy: Whoscored]
Verdict
Tottenham spent a lot to sign Tanguy Ndombele from Olympique Lyonnais this summer. The club also brought Giovani Lo Celso in on a season-long loan – which includes an option to buy – on deadline day. But Gerson is more of a complete midfielder, who would thrive under someone like Jose Mourinho. Thus, it would be a fantastic piece of business if Tottenham manage to sign him.
