Why Freddie Woodman would be a fantastic fit at Celtic

According to Chronicle Live, Celtic are monitoring Newcastle United goalkeeper Freddie Woodman, who currently plies his trade with Swansea City on loan in the Championship.

Woodman, 23, came through the ranks of Crystal Palace and Newcastle United’s youth ranks before going out on loan spells. Though he has struggled for regular game time in the past few years, he has been brilliant for the Swans this term.

The youngster has been a regular starter under Steve Cooper and has earned rave reviews for his brilliant performances. However, he has found it difficult to make it through to the Magpies senior squad due to the presence of Martin Dubravka, who has been on top of his game for both Slovenia and Newcastle. Hence, Celtic attempting a move for Woodman would be the right move.

Woodman – A future goalkeeper for Celtic

At the moment, Celtic have only one shot-stopper in their ranks in Scott Bain, who has been used rarely in the campaign. Their main goalkeeper this term, Fraser Forster has returned to Southampton after his loan spell came to an end last month.

32-year-old Forster was at his best for Celtic throughout the campaign and was one of the most influential members in the Hoops’ title win. In 28 league games, he conceded just 17 goals, keeping 14 clean sheets. However, his departure has left a huge void, with just Bain available at the manager’s disposal. Thus, signing a shot-stopper would be a good idea for Celtic.

In that regard, Woodman would be a viable option for the club. The 23-year-old has been in sensational form for the Swans this term, keeping 12 clean sheets in 41 league games. He could definitely provide a healthy competition to Bain, given his superb run of form.

Woodman has the ability to succeed at a high level and could also be seen as a future prospect as he is just 23. He has a lot of room for development and under the guidance of Lennon, he could turn to be a crucial player for the Hoops.
