Why Manchester City should make a move for Lucas Digne

According to ESPN, Manchester City are considering a move for Everton left-back Lucas Digne ahead of the 2020-21 Premier League season.

27-year-old Digne, who arrived at Everton from Barcelona in August 2018, meanwhile, has been an instant hit at Goodison Park.

The French left-back has established himself as the side’s obvious first-choice man and has made 71 appearances for them across all competitions. Despite Everton’s struggles in the league this term, Digne has enjoyed rare individual success, providing six assists from 30 matches so far.

To date, he has scored five goals and given 12 assists for the Toffees, proving that he is nothing short of talent. Having impressed himself at such a short duration since arriving at Everton, rivals Manchester City now seem keen on landing the in-form left-back.

Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola’s City have suffered defensively throughout this season that saw them fall behind champions Liverpool. Inconsistencies and poor form has hurt the City backline, who have conceded 34 goals from their 34 league games so far.

The left-back spot remains a problem position for Guardiola, who has relied on Benjamin Mendy, Oleksandr Zinchenko, and Angelino this season.

Though Mendy, in recent times, has come back into the side on a more regular basis, his past injuries remain a major concern for City. The French full-back, who arrived at the Etihad back in 2017 from Monaco has till now featured just 50 times for them. Plus, he has shown he can be very error-prone.

Zinchenko, on the other hand, remains Guardiola’s second-choice and has spent most of his time this season along the sidelines due to various injuries.

Angelino, meanwhile, is way down the pecking order and is clearly not the coach’s favourite having made just six league appearances this term. In fact, he was even sent on loan to Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in the winter transfer window in order to get more game time.

That said, City need a reliable option at left-back moving forward. And making a move for the in-form Digne will help them resolve their issues at left-back and help propel them back to the top of the league next season.

Verdict

Manchester City clearly have problems at left-back and bringing in a player like Digne will make them stronger. The French full-back has already proven his pedigree since moving to Goodison Park. Also, he is still only 27 and has plenty of football left in him and would be a perfect fit for a club like City. They should, hence, make an attempt to land him as soon as possible.
