Why Everton should complete a deal for Gleison Bremer

According to the Liverpool Echo, Everton have been credited with an interest in Torino centre-back Gleison Bremer ahead of the January window, with Carlo Ancelotti keen to bolster his defensive unit.

Reigning champions Liverpool are also understood to be chasing the 23-year-old, who has just less than three years remaining on his contract with Torino that runs until the summer of 2023. (h/t Liverpool Echo)

A youth exponent of Desportivo Brasil, Gleison Bremer spent time on loan at Sao Paulo before joining Atletico Mineiro in 2017. He shot to prominence in the Brazilian top-flight, featuring 26 times in all competitions before moving abroad with Italian club Torino in 2018.

Bremer only made 5 league appearances for Torino in his debut season but established himself as a regular starter in the following campaign.

The centre-back started 27 times in the Serie A last term and has retained his status as a regular fixture at the back for Torino this season, starting 6 out of the club’s 7 league fixtures so far. The 23-year-old has made 48 appearances for Torino in all competitions, scoring 6 times in the process.

Everton would benefit from Bremer’s potential

Everton roped in highly-rated youngster Ben Godfrey from Norwich City to bolster their central defence before the domestic deadline in October. The England U-21 international has made a positive start to life at Goodison Park and the 22-year-old looks set for a bright future as long as he continues to progress down the right path.

However, the lacklustre form of some of the other players at the back could force the Toffees to dip into the January market for further defensive reinforcements. Michael Keane remains an undisputed starter and a true leader at the heart of the backline but question marks continue to linger over the credentials of Yerry Mina.

The Colombian has been far too inconsistent this season and was dropped in favour of young Mason Holgate in Everton’s most-recent 3-1 defeat against Man United. With Jarrad Branthwaite still very young and inexperienced, the Toffees can certainly do with another readymade first-team option in that department.

Despite having more than enough cover at the back, Everton conceded 56 goals in the Premier League last season and have already shipped 14 goals in 8 league games so far this term. That clearly epitomises the need for some defensive upgrades. A potential deal for Gleison Bremer in January would make a lot of sense.

Bremer, 23, has already played a lot of first-team football for a player of his age, establishing himself as a bright young centre-back at Torino. The Brazilian has pretty much been an undisputed starter in the Serie A over the past 12 months and looks more than ready to test his credentials in English football.

Verdict

The arrival of Godfrey in the summer has handed a youthful boost to Everton’s backline and a potential move for Gleison Bremer would further lay down the foundations of a defensive rebuild at Goodison Park. Ancelotti has used his pulling power as a three-time Champions League-winning manager to bring some top-quality players to Everton. The Toffees should back him once again if the Italian genuinely rates Bremer as a player capable of thriving in England.

The 23-year-old has already started to deliver on his potential and still has his best years ahead of him. That said, Everton making a move for the Brazilian in January would surely be a step in the right direction.
