Why Edinson Cavani to Newcastle United could boost their attack

As per Le10 Sport (h/t Express), Newcastle United have received a huge boost in their pursuit of star striker Edinson Cavani, as fellow suitors Inter Milan are unable to meet his wage demands.

Cavani, 33, came through the ranks of Danubio FC’s youth ranks and moved to Italy in 2007. After three seasons with Palermo, he was signed by Napoli initially on loan in 2010, before making the transfer permanent in 2011. He went on to become a fan favorite at the San Paolo stadium, scoring 104 goals in 138 games for Napoli.

A move to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2013 helped him achieve glory. He went on to win several trophies with the French giants, including six French League titles. He has also established himself as one of the most lethal strikers in Europe after playing for a long time at a higher level.

The report also suggests that Inter Milan are also interested in signing the talismanic striker, who is set to leave the French giants this summer when his contract expires. Thus, Newcastle should make a move for the Uruguayan international when the transfer window opens.

The Magpies have endured a disappointing campaign especially after making a good start to the season. They were within the top half of the table until Christmas but their inconsistency has led Steve Bruce’s side stoop to the 13th position.

The manager must strengthen the squad before the new season starts if they are to progress in further campaigns. And with the talks of the takeover reaching its final stages, they should make sure they bring in quality players.

Cavani could be a leader in Newcastle’s attack

The Magpies’ attack has failed miserably throughout the campaign. They have managed to score just 25 goals so far, which is the lowest in the league this term. Joelinton, Andy Carroll, Dwight Gayle and Yoshinori Muto are the four strikers available at the manager’s disposal.

Joelinton has scored just one league goal while the rest of the strikers are yet to open their account. Thus, signing Cavani should be a priority, as it would bolster their attacking unit. The Uruguayan has made 556 career appearances so far, scoring 341 goals.

Cavani’s experience at a higher level would definitely be a massive boost for the team. He has scored more than 15 goals in each of the last 9 league campaigns and has the energy left to lead Newcastle’s beleaguered attack.

Verdict

It is clear that Newcastle are in dire need of centre-forwards and Cavani would provide them with much-needed depth and quality upfront. He has a proven track record and would provide them with the required goals. Thus, the Magpies should lure the former Napoli man this summer.
