Why Edinson Cavani to Manchester United could bolster their attack

As per L’Equipe (h/t Mirror), Manchester United seem to be strong contenders to sign Paris Saint Germain star Edinson Cavani this summer.

Cavani, 33, has established himself as one of the best strikers in Europe after being at the top of his game for several years. After 3 successful seasons with Napoli, he was signed by the French giants in the summer of 2013.

The Uruguayan went on to make 301 appearances for PSG, winning 7 Ligue 1 titles in the process. Until last year, Cavani was the first-choice striker, but this season Thomas Tuchel has pushed him to the bench. Thus, United should take advantage of his situation and sign the talisman this summer when his contract at Parc des Princes comes to ends.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has managed to bring a change in the team’s performance in the latter stages of the season. The Red Devils have improved a lot since January and they have gone unbeaten in the last 11 games across all competitions.

In the process, United have scored 29 goals and conceded just twice. The defensive unit, led by Harry Maguire, has been at its best. The Englishman has struck up a fine partnership alongside Victor Lindelof and they have helped the team keep 8 clean sheets in the league so far.

The midfield has also improved a lot from last season despite the absence of star player Paul Pogba. The introduction of Bruno Fernandes has brought life to United’s attacking unit. The playmaker has been the centre of their resurgence since January.

However, the manager should look to bring in reinforcements to some key areas if they have to do better in the next campaign.

Cavani could be a useful addition to United’s attack

United have several options in their attacking unit to lead the line. Marcus Rashford has been excellent in this campaign, scoring 14 league goals prior to picking up a major injury. Anthony Martial took on from where Rashford left and has found the back of the net 11 times this term.

Mason Greenwood, who was promoted from the academy, has been the find of the season. He has also played his part well but still needs experience. Odion Ighalo, who was signed form Shanghai Shenhua on loan in January, has done well, but his loan deal expires at the end of the season.

In that regard, signing Cavani would be a huge boost for Solskjaer’s side. He has made over 550 career appearances, scoring 341 goals. His experience would be helpful for the youngsters in the team. He has a proven record and is one of the most lethal strikers in Europe.

The Uruguayan international would add depth to United’s squad. Moreover, given his performances in the past few years, he would be a valuable addition to Solskjaer’s side. In 14 Ligue 1 games this term, he has already scored 4 goals and hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down.

Verdict

At 33, he may not be a long-term prospect for the Red Devils. But the former Napoli man would provide United with much-needed extra goals. He is one of the most experienced players in Europe and his presence would be massive for the club, as it would allow the youngsters to learn from him and develop further. Thus, United should make a move for Cavani this summer.
