Why Edinson Cavani to Arsenal would bolster their attack

Former England striker Darren bent has urged Arsenal to sign Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani in the summer if Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leaves, as per the Metro.

Cavani, 33, rose through the ranks of Danubio FC in his homeland and made a name for himself in Italy. He joined Palermo in January 2007 and made 117 appearances for I Rosanero, scoring 37 goals before moving to Napoli in the summer of 2010. In 138 games for the Naples outfit, he scored a staggering 104 goals. He won the Italian Cup with Napoli in 2011/12 and also finished as Serie A’s top scorer in his final season in Italy.

He moved to France with PSG in the summer of 2013. The Uruguayan won several trophies, including 6 Ligue 1 titles and established himself as one of the most lethal strikers in Europe. He is also the top scorer for the French outfit across all competitions. And with his contract coming to an end this summer, Arsenal should make a move for him.

Cavani’s experience could be key for Arsenal next season

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are the three centre-forwards available at the manager’s disposal. While the Gabonese international has been brilliant, scoring 17 goals so far, Lacazette has not lived up to the expectations.

With Aubameyang’s future still uncertain, signing an experienced striker would do the Gunners a world of good. Nketiah hasn’t established himself and is too young to lead the attack. Thus, a striker is a must in the summer.

In that regard, signing Cavani would be a good move. The Uruguayan has made over 550 career appearances and is one of the best strikers in Europe. He has scored more than 10 goals in each of the last 11 league campaigns. This season, in 14 Ligue 1 games, he scored 4 goals and 2 assists and looks to be in form despite getting limited opportunities.

Cavani’s experience could come in handy for the Gunners. He has played for several years at the highest level and his inclusion to Arteta’s squad would definitely bring in healthy competition.

Verdict

Apart from Aubameyang, Arsenal have lacked quality up front. And with the club’s attacking spearhead’s future uncertain, the Gunners should be wise to make a move for Cavani. He could provide them with the goals though he would be around for only a short time. And the Uruguayan has proven his mettle throughout his playing career.
