Why Danilo Pereira to Arsenal would bolster their midfield

According to ESPN FC (h/t The Metro), Arsenal are plotting a summer move for FC Porto midfielder Danilo Pereira as they would not be able to meet Thomas Partey’s €50m buy-out clause.

The 28-year-old came through the ranks of GD Estoril’s youth system and joined Benfica’s U19 side. After spells with Parma, Roda JC and Maritimo, he was signed by FC Porto in the summer of 2015. Since then, he has emerged as a key player for Porto, helping them win the Portuguese title in 2018 and move to the top of the Primeira Liga table this term.

He was also instrumental in Portugal’s Euro 2016 winning campaign, whilst also helping them claim the Nations League title last year. He is one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe, and the report suggests that Porto are willing to sell him for around a third of his £54m release clause. Thus, Arsenal should make use of this opportunity to bolster their midfield.

Danilo – An experienced campaigner to lead Arsenal’s midfield

Apart from defensive reinforcements, the manager also needs to strengthen the midfield. Lucas Torreira and Granit Xhaka are the only two defensive midfielders available at the manager’s disposal. Swiss international Xhaka has not been at his best but he has put in some stable displays after Arteta’s arrival.

And Torreira has been out for several months due to a major injury. Also, the Gunners mostly have young and inexperienced players in the midfield. Thus, a defensive midfielder is a must and Porto’s Danilo would a suitable option for the club.

The 28-year-old has been a key figure for both Porto and Portugal in the last few years. He has made over 300 career appearances and could be a valuable player in Arteta’s squad. He is capable of constructing the game from a deeper position and has immense experience at the highest level.

He is one of the best midfielders in a defensive situation. In the 20 league games he has featured for Porto this term, the Portuguese outfit have kept 12 clean sheets. He is also capable of playing in central defence and his versatility would be a massive boost for Arteta if he moves to Arsenal.
