Why Celtic should re-sign Teemu Pukki to bolster their attack

According to The Scotsman, Celtic captain Scott Brown has expressed his desire to bring back Norwich City striker Teemu Pukki to Celtic Park.

Pukki, 30, came through the youth ranks of FC KooTeePee and played for several clubs, including Celtic before moving to Carrow Road in the summer of 2018. After moving away from Celtic in 2015, the striker regained form during his time with Brondby.

He has now become an integral member of Daniel Farke’s system. Last season, he was instrumental in helping the Canaries get promoted to the top-flight with 29 goals in the Championship.

He has continued with the fine form this season, establishing himself as one of the best strikers in the Premier League. Thus, Celtic should consider re-signing Pukki this summer.

The Hoops, meanwhile, have dominated the Scottish Premiership once again this term. With 26 wins in 30 league games, Neil Lennon’s men are atop the league standings, 13 points clear of second-placed Rangers. They are on course to lift the Premiership title for the sixth time in as many years.

They have already won the Bretford Cup after defeating the Gers in the final and are in contention for other titles too, except the Europa League as they crashed out from the European games in the previous round.

Star striker Odsonne Edouard has been their go-to man, leading the line brilliantly with 21 goals in the league. The defence has also played a significant role in their title quest, conceding just 19 goals so far, which is the joint-best defensive record in the league.

However, Celtic boss Lennon should consider bringing in reinforcements to their squad if they are to continue with their dominance and do better in the European stages.

Pukki – An experienced leader in attack for Celtic

Edouard has been their best player so far, banging in goals at regular intervals. And Leigh Griffiths has played the supportive role, scoring 9 goals so far. Apart from them, Patryk Klimala and Vakoun Issouf Bayo are the only two centre-forwards available but they are young and inexperienced to lead the line.

The French striker is also heavily linked with a move away from the club with big teams lurking around to snap him this summer. And if he leaves, Celtic would be left with limited options up front.

In that regard, re-signing Pukki from Norwich City would be a good move by the Hoops. The former Helsinki man has already made over 400 career appearances and his experience could be influential to the squad next season.

The Finnish international has already scored 11 goals in the league so far and has established himself into a top striker. His inclusion would be a massive boost to the team, if Edouard leaves and Pukki could lead them in his place.

Verdict

At 30, Pukki has a few more years left to play at a higher level and given his form in recent years, he could be the best option for the Hoops. He is capable of getting in the goals and could also bring healthy competition in the squad. Thus, Celtic should be able to lure the Finland international at the earliest.
