Why Celtic should make a move for Jordon Ibe in the summer

According to The Sun, Celtic have a chance to sign their long-term target Jordon Ibe on a free transfer once his contract with Bournemouth expires.

Ibe, 24, came through the ranks of Wycombe Wanderers’ youth system and joined Liverpool U18 side in 2012. He was sent on loan spells to Derby County and Birmingham City after failing to break into the Reds’ senior team initially. After 58 appearances for the Premier League side, he was bought by the Cherries in 2016.

In his first two seasons in the South coast, he was a regular member of the squad but he could manage just 2 assists and 6 goals in total. Last season, he played 19 games and has now fallen down the pecking order under Eddie Howe. And with his contract set to expire in the summer, he could be on his way out of the Vitality Stadium for nothing and Celtic must get him.

Neil Lennon’s side have been dominant in the Scottish League over the years and have managed to extend their lead with 13 points over the Old firm rivals Rangers. They have defended their title well, with 25 wins in 29 games.

However, they need to be at their best in the next season and the manager should look to bring in some changes to the squad. The Hoops need to add wingers to their squad as they have limited options on the flanks.

Southampton loanee Mohamed Elyounoussi is the only established winger in their ranks but his loan spell with Celtic is coming to an end. And if he returns to St. Mary’s Stadium in the summer, Lennon will be left without any experienced players on the flanks.

While Daniel Arzani hasn’t featured in any games so far, Marvin Shved has made just one appearance in the league. And Mikey Johnston, who is injured for a long time, is just 20 and cannot be depended upon. Hence, the manager should look to add depth to his squad and so, he must make a move for Jordon Ibe in the summer.

Though the 24-year-old has not been at his best this season, he still has room for improvement and his experience in the Premier League could be a factor to help him pick up from where he left.

Predominantly a right-winger, Ibe is capable of playing on the opposite side and also in the attacking midfield position. His inclusion in the squad would also give the manager various options to choose from, given the Englishman develops himself and proves his worth.

Verdict

Ibe has struggled for game time this season and this opportunity would also help him revive his career. And Celtic can add depth to their squad, which would be left out of options at the end of the season.

Therefore, the former English U21 international should be lured to Celtic Park and this could be helpful for both the club and the player.
