Why a new deal for Nemanja Matic is the right step by Manchester United

According to BBC, Serbia midfielder Nemanja Matic has committed his future to Manchester United by signing a new two-year deal.

The 31-year-old’s current contract with Red Devils was due to expire at the end of the next season. However, the new deal will tie him down at Old Trafford until 2023. The former Chelsea midfielder has been of immense value to United ever since joining the club for an initial £35m in the summer of 2017.

Despite not being a regular starter this season, Matic has racked up 1 goal and 3 assists for United in 27 games across all competitions. And his contribution in a defensive midfield role shows his importance to the side. Of late, his form has improved and he has also gained the manager’s trust.

Matic – An experienced veteran in Man United’s squad

He is one of the senior members in the squad and is an inspiration to the upcoming youngsters, having appeared in 114 games since joining United in 2017. The Serbian international has made over 450 career appearances, scoring 26 goals and providing 31 assists despite being a defensive midfielder.

Matic’s position seemed to be in jeopardy earlier in the campaign with Fred and Scott McTominay starting regularly and doing a decent job. However, just prior to the season getting suspended, Matic showed his brilliance on a few occasions.

He has been given more game time than the above-mentioned midfielders since the restart, and he has done well so far. He has been the glue that has kept the squad moving forward in recent times. His presence in the middle has helped Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba move deeper into the opponent’s half without fear.

The Serbian international still has the energy left to play at the highest level. He has proved his worth under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer since the restart and is arguably one of the best players in the squad in recent times.

The 31-year-old’s experience could be key for United next season if they qualify for the Champions League. And his longevity in the game could be a motivation for the youngsters coming through the ranks at Old Trafford.

Hence, United’s decision to extend his stay with the club, by all means, looks like a step in the right direction.
