WWE star Sonya Deville was the victim of a failed kidnapping at her home

WWE star Sonya Deville was the target of a failed kidnapping attempt at her home last night.

The SmackDown star, who is WWE’s first openly gay athlete, has been on a rise in the promotion in recent months.

She has turned heel ever since she split up with her best friend Mandy Rose in the company. The pair are to clash in a hair vs hair match at SummerSlam but it could have been a completely different story for her.

ESPN reported that the man trying to kidnap Deville was Phillip Thomas. He was arrested and charged with three felonies in Lutz, Florida.

The report adds that the police did not release the name of the victim’s name. However, ESPN confirmed that the home where the arrest took place was in Deville’s name.

Thomas had been planning this move for eight months and according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office news release, he entered Deville’s home at 2:43 AM.

This triggered an alarm and Deville and a friend were able to leave in a car before police were called and dealt with the issue.

Thomas was still in Deville’s home when the police arrived and he was carrying duct tape, mace, a knife and zip ties amongst other things.

The 24-year-old is reported to work at Applebee’s as a crew member and had been stalking Deville for a few months. A release from the police added that Thomas was planning to take Deville hostage.

WWE stars shocked at the attempt

Deville was quick to thank the Police for their great work and confirmed she was safe. However, this could have turned out to be a completely different situation had the alarms not worked in her home.

The 26-year-old is one of the rising stars in WWE and was in the world of MMA before making the switch.

Many WWE stars, past and present, tweeted their response to all this and were thankful that Deville was safe.

It will be interesting to see if Deville is back on SmackDown this week. This might be a traumatic experience for anyone and taking some time off could be the right thing for Deville.
