Who is Eric Mays?
Eric Mays is a local politician who is currently serving on the Flint City Council in Michigan, USA. He’s been a council member since 2013 and has been re-elected multiple times since then.
Mays was born and raised in Flint, Michigan, and attended Flint Northern High School. He then pursued his education at Flint Community College, where he earned an associate’s degree in business administration. Later on, he graduated from the University of Michigan-Flint with a bachelor’s degree in political science.
Before entering politics, Mays worked as a real estate broker and also devoted his time to community activism. He was actively involved with several community organizations, such as the Flint Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), where he even held the position of president.
Why was Eric Mays convicted in 2023?
According to a recent MLive report, a jury in March 2023 found Flint City Council member Eric Mays guilty of disorderly conduct. Mays was accused of causing a disturbance during an incident at a neighbourhood pub in Flint, which gave rise to the allegations.
Witnesses stated throughout the trial that Mays was disruptive and used language that was inappropriate and created a scene. His actions, according to the prosecution, were unruly and consequently violated the law.
In court, Mays defended himself, disputing the charges and asserting that he was being singled out for political reasons. But the jury ruled him guilty, and as a result, he might go to jail.
Mays has already encountered legal issues. In 2015, he was found guilty of driving while intoxicated. In 2018, he was charged with assaulting a police officer. Nevertheless, Mays has remained the city’s 1st Ward representative ever since 2013.
