About Chance the Rapper

Chancellor Bennett was raised in Chicago by his parents who both had ties to politics. Bennett’s interest in music began with Michael Jackson, but he started listening to hip-hop after hearing “Through the Wire” by Kanye West. West has been a big influence on Bennett’s music, and the two met at a music festival in 2014. Bennett started rapping in the sixth grade and formed a duo in high school. He gained attention after meeting Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley and released his debut project, 10 Day, after being suspended for ten days for smoking cannabis.

While attending Jones College Prep High School, Chance faced ridicule from some teachers over his musical aspirations. He recorded his first full-length project, 10 Day, in eight months following a 10-day suspension for marijuana possession. The mixtape, released in 2012, was well-received locally and helped him make connections with producers, including Chuck Inglish and Kenny Jame$. Forbes magazine also featured the project.

Personal Life

Chancellor Bennett was raised by political and legal professionals in Chicago. He attended Jones College Prep High School, where he joined the Jewish Student Union, and grew up in a middle-class area. Bennett first fell in love with music thanks to Michael Jackson, but it wasn’t until he heard Kanye West’s “Through the Wire” on the radio that he learned about hip-hop.

Bennett, who started rapping in sixth grade and started the duo Instrumentality in high school, credits West with having a significant effect on him. Early concerts by Bennett took place at YOUmedia Lyricist Loft, and the mayor of Chicago, Richard M. Daley, was a fan.
