What did Bob Huggins say on a radio show?

After making inappropriate remarks during a radio broadcast, West Virginia basketball coach Bob Huggins recently found himself in hot water. Huggins was questioned regarding the transfer portal and the prospect of bringing in a player from the Bearcats’ rival Jesuit university, Xavier.

During the interview on Cincinnati radio station WLW, Huggins made a statement that stirred controversy: “Catholics don’t do that. I tell you what, any school that can throw rubber penises on the floor and then say they didn’t do it, by God they can get away with anything. It was the Crosstown Shootout. What it was, was all those [expletive], those Catholic [expletive], I think.”

Realizing the gravity of his words, Huggins issued an apology later that day. In his statement, he acknowledged using “a completely insensitive and abhorrent phrase” for which there is no excuse. He expressed deep remorse for offending individuals, including the Xavier University community, the University of Cincinnati, and West Virginia University. Huggins also acknowledged the importance of consequences for our words and actions, accepting any repercussions that may come his way. He expressed his commitment to personal growth, acknowledging the need to do better in the future.

The athletic department of West Virginia also issued a statement criticizing Huggins’ views as rude and inappropriate. They emphasised that such language does not reflect the principles of the university and gave the assurance that the matter is being looked into and will be dealt with appropriately.
