Why Marco Brescianini would be a good addition for West Ham United

According to a report from Calciomercato (h/t Football.london), West Ham United have made an enquiry over the availability of AC Milan youngster Marco Brescianini as they eye a summer move for the midfielder.

Brescianini came through the youth ranks at AC Milan. The 20-year-old made 13 appearances for the club’s U17s, scoring one goal. He was promoted to the Rossoneri’s Primavera outfit in 2017, for whom he has shone brightly.

So far, Brescianini has featured 75 times for the Primavera side, bagging 11 goals and 4 assists. The 20-year-old, who plays as a box-to-box midfielder and also as a defensive midfielder, is yet to make his senior debut for the Rossoneri. But he has been on the substitutes bench for a number of matches this term.

West Ham need to bolster their midfield

West Ham, meanwhile, have endured another poor campaign. The Hammers are staring at the prospect of relegation, as they sit level on points with 18th-placed Bournemouth. Given their performances this season, it goes without saying that the squad needs an overhaul, irrespective of their league status.

Central midfield is one area where West Ham must secure reinforcements immediately. Declan Rice has impressed once again, while captain Mark Noble has also done well. But he turned 33 years old earlier this month and is entering the tail-end of his career.

In addition, Carlos Sanchez is out of contract at the end of the season. And Jack Wilshere, once again, has spent more time out injured than on the field. Tomas Soucek has impressed since arriving on loan in January and could be signed permanently. But the Hammers need to add more quality and depth to their midfield unit.

Hence, signing Brescianini would be a good move by the Hammers. While the youngster is yet to have a taste of senior football, the AC Milan man has impressed in spades with the club’s Primavera outfit.

In the 2019/20 campaign, the 20-year-old has performed admirably, producing a return of 8 goals and 2 assists in just 16 appearances. Those are impressive numbers for a central midfielder. In addition, the fact that he has captained the team on several occasions this term is an indicator of how highly he is regarded within the club.

With Sanchez’s deal expiring and Wilshere’s injury problems, bringing in a talented youngster like Brescianini would help West Ham. His arrival would add some more depth to the midfield department. And with experience, the 20-year-old can grow into a key member of the side in the coming years.

Verdict

West Ham United are in need of strengthening their midfield department heading into the next season. And signing Brescianini would help them in that regard. The 20-year-old may not have a lot of experience, but has displayed his potential with the AC Milan reserves. His addition would add more depth to the side, while also increasing healthy competition within the squad.
