Watford Opinion: Why the Hornets should go all out for Philip Billing?

Before the January transfer window commenced, the Sun claimed Watford were interested in Huddersfield Town star Philip Billing.

Philip Billing, 22, has been one of the very few bright sparks for Huddersfield Town, whose relegation from the Premier League was confirmed last week.

The Denmark U21 international, along with a number of high-profile players, will certainly leave the John Smith Stadium at the end of the season following the club’s relegation.

That would give Javi Gracia a fantastic chance to poach Billing in the summer, with Watford currently fighting for a place in the Europa League.

The Hornets have enjoyed a fantastic season so far and rightly find themselves in the mix to finish outside the ‘Big Six’. A place in the Europa League would certainly help them attract players and even Billing could be tempted to make the jump to Vicarage Road.

The Hornets have a couple of really powerful central midfielders in their ranks. Abdoulaye Doucoure is one of them to have impressed mightily this season but he has ambitions of winning titles and playing in the Champions League. Should the Frenchman leave at the end of the season, Billing could be perfect to replace him at Vicarage Road.

The Denmark youth international will certainly be a welcome addition as not only will he add strength and physicality to the Watford team but is also capable of creating with the ball at his feet. A perfect mix of combativeness and class, the 22-year-old uses his energy to cover a lot of ground and help the team’s creative players to operate freely.

The rangy midfielder’s technical ability on the ball is fantastic, whilst possessing the strength and natural athleticism to win aerial duels in the middle of the park. Billing also has a sweet left foot with which he can strike the ball from distance and score long-range pearlers.

The 22-year-old would be an incredible fit to Watford’s midfield and would complement the likes of Doucoure and Capoue very well. The big Dane’s style of play suits Gracia’s philosophy and his presence in central midfield next to Capoue would combine both quality and physicality of the highest order.

The Dane, with his technical abilities and physical prowess, will help Gracia challenge the Big Six next season and he is a signing that the Hornets shouldn’t think twice about making in the summer transfer window.
