The 2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem locks horns with Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta in the first round of the US Open.

The 28-year-old returned to the tennis court in March after being sidelined for several months owing to injury and other complications. Thiem has won 9 matches in 2022 and lost 10.
He made it to the quarterfinals of the Swedish Open and the Austrian Open. His best result in 2022 came at the Swiss Open, where he reached the semi-final stage before losing to Matteo Berrettini. At the Winston-Salem Open tournament that ended a few days ago, Thiem bowed out in the round of 16 following a loss to Jack Draper.
Pablo Carreno Busta
The 31-year-old has notched up some impressive performances in 2022. He reached the Barcelona Open final before losing to the dominant Carlos Alcaraz. In the Halle Open, he reached the quarterfinal before losing to Nick Kyrgios. After a first-round exit at Wimbledon, Carreno Busta came back strongly with a semifinal outing in Sweden.
At the Canadian Open, he won his seventh singles title defeating Hubert Hurkacz in the final. At the recently concluded Cincinnati Masters, Miomir Kecmanovic ousted the veteran in the first round.
