Former World No. 3 Dominic Thiem won his only US Open singles title in 2020
Dominic Thiem is likely to play at this year’s US Open and it will be the first one he plays since winning the event in 2020. He was supposed to defend his trophy last year but a wrist injury completely derailed his season forcing him not only to miss the US Open but the rest of the year as well. Thiem looks likely to play at the US Open again however he did not use his protected ranking to enter the event according to the most recent entry list.
Since Thiem did not use his protected ranking to participate in this edition’s US Open, the former champion will likely receive a Wildcard entry. Thiem has been entering events mostly thanks to his protected ranking option because his ranking dropped considerably due to not playing. The US Open is scheduled to take place from 29 August to 11 September.

Until March this year, Thiem had not played on the ATP tour since June 2021. His last event was at Mallorca when he sustained a right wrist which put him out for the rest of the season. The Austrian attempted to begin his 2022 season afresh in Cordoba but suffered a separate right finger issue involving a strained ligament. Thiem then delayed his return further by withdrawing from the two ATP-1000 events – Indian Wells and Miami Open in favor of making a return on his preferred clay surface.
However, his plans were hampered after he tested positive for covid-19 last week. He recovered in time for the Serbia Open but looked out of rhythm and touched and succumbed to a disappointing loss.
Over the past two months, the former US Open winner is on a resurgent run, having made the quarterfinals in Bastad, the semifinals in Gstaad, and followed it up with another semi-final appearance at the Swiss Open.
Despite his consistent run in the last few events, Thiem is not yet at his sublime best. It will be interesting to see if the Austrian can live up to expectations at the US Open later this month.
