‘El Cucuy’ Tony Ferguson has compared the trilogy bout between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier to Montreal-based Cirque du Soleil.
Conor McGregor was knocked out for the first time in his MMA career against Dustin Poirier during their rematch at UFC 257. The aftermath quickly set up a showdown ‘trilogy fight’ between the two, and the date was later revealed to be the 10th of July.
More recently Tony Ferguson who is set to take on Beneil Dariush at UFC 262, on the 15th of May, weighed in on the trilogy bout.
‘El Cucuy’ compared the trilogy bout to the famed Cirque de Soleil – the contemporary circus based in Montreal.
Tony was quoted as saying:
“I don’t care. When it comes to that kind of stuff with Conor it is a shit show. But, he is keeping the show alive too. It takes more than one person, so you’ve got Dustin, myself, we’re just doing our part to make sure that the fans are out there getting what they want – which is entertainment. In the entertainment industry, you have the Cirque de Soleil, how many different kinds of acts are there (in Cirque de Soleil)?”
Tony then added that each top-ranked fighter, viz. Conor, Dustin, himself, were all special in their own mindset. Saying this, he concluded :
“So in this approach where Conor and Dustin are doing the thing, that’s good for them.”
Conor McGregor calls off trilogy bout against Dustin Poirier
More recently, in an unexpected turn of events, Conor McGregor reportedly turned off the trilogy bout against Dustin Poirier, due to Dustin Poirier’s charity related payment dispute.
After Dustin had claimed that there was no contact from Conor and his team once their fight got over, things went haywire. Conor’s manager Audie Attar stepped in and Conor ripped into Dustin, adding that he would fight someone else.
Later, Michael Chandler stepped in, as he expressed his desire to take on the Irishman, despite having a title bout himself, against Charles Oliveira on the 15th of May at UFC 262.
