“Not a better time” – Rafael dos Anjos throws his name into Conor McGregor fight for July 10

Rafael dos Anjos has called out Conor McGregor for a fight that should have happened years ago.

There was a time when Rafael dos Anjos was considered to be one of the most feared fighters in the lightweight division. Barring his loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov in 2014, he was an unstoppable machine a few years ago.

In fact, it was the loss against Khabib (since RDA was on a 5 match win streak) that spurred him on, as he went on another 5 match win streak in just a span of 20 months, which included victories against Nate Diaz, Anthony Pettis and Donald Cerrone.

And, then came his big moment, as he was scheduled to take on Conor McGregor in March 2016. Just two weeks before the fight he broke his foot leading to the fight being cancelled.

And, since then he has never been able to revive his career, although he still has a decent ranking.

More recently, McGregor’s recent denial of fighting Dustin Poirier in the trilogy bout, has put other top ranked lightweights on high alert. Seeing this as a glorious opportunity to take a shot at ‘The Notorious’, RDA has called out The Irishman for a fight.

He tweeted:

“Not a better time than now! Everyone else is booked, let’s go! July 10th @danawhite @seanshelby @ufc”

On paper this match is a definite, ‘Yes Sir’, since McGregor is ranked just one number below RDA (RDA – #7 and Conor- #6). But ‘The Notorious’ will surely not be risking further by taking on lower-ranked opponents, as a loss might spell the doom for The Irishman.

What next for RDA?

Only last November did RDA return to the lightweight division, after achieving moderate success in the 170lbs division.

He took on Paul Felder, in a gory match, as he won via. split decision. Both the fighters won the fight of the night bonus, that night.

Since then, RDA has called out a lot of opponents but has always been turned down. Fighting McGregor will do him justice, but will the Irishman respond to his call out?

It seems unlikely since Dana White confirmed that Poirier vs McGregor is ready to go after some drama recently.
