UFC welterweight Nate Diaz might have his next fight this year

Nate Diaz made an entertaining return to the Octagon, after almost 2 years. The ‘Stockton Slugger’ last fought Jorge Masvidal at UFC 244 in November 2019.

He took on Leon Edwards in the first ever 5-round non-title fight in UFC history. After being dominated by the Brit for almost 24 minutes, he switched on in the last minute of the fight, almost knocking out Edwards.

With that performance, Diaz once against showed why he is loved so much by the fans.

In the recent episode of the Schmozone podcast, veteran American Mixed Martial Artist, Jake Shields who currently plies his trade in the PFL, opened up on who Diaz should fight next.

He had an interesting take on the same:

“If I was matchmaking, I would probably have him fight the loser of Conor[McGregor] vs Poirier [Dustin], that would be another mega-fight. Obviously, if Conor loses – the trilogy [against Nate Diaz], that makes sense. If Poirier loses, that would be a great fight as well.”

Conor McGregor vs Nate Diaz is one of the greatest rivalries in UFC history

Little did people expect someone like Nate Diaz, who was a replacement fighter to become Conor McGregor’s greatest rival.

Diaz who had stepped in as a replacement for Rafael dos Anjos within a fortnight’s notice, defeated the Irishman in one of the greatest shocks in UFC history.

The pair fought in a rematch, 5 months later, and McGregor exacted revenge, albeit via. a narrow majority decision.

As for Dustin Poirier vs Diaz, the pair were supposed to fight in late 2018. They even had their face-offs. But, the fight was called off due to Poirier pulling out due to an injury.
