Islam Makhachev reacts to Dustin Poirier vs. Justin Gaethje being booked for the ‘BMF’ championship

The prospect of Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje competing for the BMF title doesn’t appear to impress Islam Makhachev. The thrilling lightweight clash was just revealed by UFC president Dana White as the main event of UFC 291 on July 29 in Salt Lake City.

The UFC designed a commemorative belt called “Baddest Motherfker” (BMF) to promote a fight between Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal. Diaz challenged Gamebred to a fight after his victory over Anthony Pettis at UFC 241, during which he declared himself the “baddest motherfker in the game.” After defeating Diaz at UFC 244, Masvidal became the undisputed BMF champion and remained so until his retirement.

The UFC would like a rematch between the two lightweight sluggers now that ‘Gamebred’ has given up his honorary belt, with the winner fighting for the BMF championship.

Popular opinion holds that both Poirier and Gaethje are very skilled fighters, but Islam Makhachev doesn’t see one of them taking home the uncontested championship. The lightweight champion sarcastically quoted a tweet from MMA Junkie’s fight poster and wrote:

“You deserve this belt.”

At UFC on Fox 29 in April 2018, Dustin Poirier knocked out Justin Gaethje in the fourth round. The main event is a five-round bout between two boxers, each of whom is coming off of a victory.

At UFC 284, Islam Makhachev successfully defended his lightweight title against Alexander Volkanovski. He will next defend his championship at UFC 289 against whoever wins the fight between Charles Oliveira and Beneil Dariush.

What happened when Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje clashed for the first time?

for his relentless pressure and powerful strikes, pressed forward, while Poirier showcased his precise striking and slick ground game. The first round saw both fighters landing heavy blows and exchanging wild combinations, thrilling the crowd.

In the second round, Poirier began to find his rhythm and started landing cleaner shots on Gaethje. He displayed superior boxing skills and showcased his ability to counter Gaethje’s attacks effectively. Poirier’s accuracy and power started to wear down Gaethje, but the latter continued to show immense heart and durability.

The fight reached its climax in the fourth round when Poirier caught Gaethje with a barrage of punches, forcing the referee to step in and stop the fight. Poirier emerged victorious with a technical knockout, earning a well-deserved victory in what was an intense and back-and-forth battle.

The Gaethje vs. Poirier fight remains one of the most memorable lightweight clashes in recent UFC history, showcasing the heart, skill, and determination of both fighters. It solidified Dustin Poirier’s position as a top contender in the lightweight division and further cemented Gaethje’s reputation as an exciting and tough competitor.
