Chael Sonnen highlights why Conor McGregor won’t get Kamaru Usman title shot

Despite being the only one to call out Kamaru Usman, Chael Sonnen believes Conor McGregor won’t get to fight Kamaru Usman for the title.

Usman dived further into the realm of greatness, as he brutally knocked out Jorge Masvidal at UFC 261 to successfully defend his welterweight title. With that win, the Nigerian Nightmare notched up his 14th consecutive win in the UFC, having already gone past Georges St-Pierre.

Usman has almost conquered the welterweight division to the fullest, beating almost all the top ranked welterweight contenders.

However, a rematch against his foe Colby Covington is expected to take place soon. The pair previously met at UFC 245, where Usman won via. TKO towards the very end of the fight.

Ever since Covington lost that match at UFC 245, he has been calling for a rematch because he still feels Usman didn’t finish him convincingly, while also faking nut-shots throughout the course of the match.

And, elsewhere, Conor McGregor accused Usman of copying his striking techniques and also called him out saying that he was coming for his welterweight belt.

Former UFC fighter and current analyst Chael Sonnen addressed this in his latest YouTube video. He believed that the Irishman might not get the title shot against Usman, after all.

Sonnen was quoted as saying:

“He is coming off a loss, he can’t get a title fight within his own division, he’s not going to get a title fight in some other division.”

But, Sonnen went on to say that, barring Covington, McGregor has been the only one who has called Usman out. He attributed this to other welterweights being busy and others stepping aside since they felt it was Covington’s time.

Sonnen however remained rooted to his stance that McGregor wouldn’t get a welterweight title shot.

Chael Sonnen believes Kamaru Usman is the best fighter at the moment

Usman has hardly faced any trouble defeating his opponents in the UFC. He has 14 wins on the trot, since joining the UFC, and only Anderson Silva is ahead of him in the list of fighters with the most consecutive wins in the UFC.

Due to his stellar exploits, Usman’s name is slowly entering the GOAT debate, and Chael Sonnen believes it is hard not to consider Usman the best active fighter in the UFC.

“Is Usman [best pound-for-pound] right?…Hard to say he’s not. I don’t know who I would put in front of him. And don’t forget he is coming off a win over a great fighter by knockout…If I didn’t say Usman was the best, who would I say?

Sonnen then supported his claim saying that Usman who once used to defeat his opponents using his superior wrestling, has now brought a holistic approach to his game. Uncle Chael said Usman has shown how good his striking can be in his last few matches.
