Conor McGregor has been questioned regarding his training camp after UFC 257 but Chael Sonnen wasn’t buying it
One big talking point after UFC 257 was the training camp of Conor McGregor. The Irishman changed things up before the fight and was even seen training in Portugal before facing Dustin Poirier.
This was different to him training in Ireland or the United States, and some corners claimed this was the reason why he lost to Poirier.
McGregor came into this clash as the favourite. This was his first fight in almost a year, but it was almost the same for Poirier too.
While McGregor claimed that not being active in the UFC was one reason why he wasn’t as sharp as expected, others pinned the blame on his camp.
However, Sonnen wasn’t having any of it and claimed that training is a norm for top athletes. Sonnen claimed “camp” was a made up term in boxing or someone who wanted to be away from his family.
“There is nothing wrong with Conor’s camp. Conor is telling the truth when he tells you he had inactivity.
“People that say that’s excuse making by Conor supporters and it’s also people trying to take away from Dustin’s victory, it’s not.
“That is the reality of what happened. That is the worst Conor McGregor I have ever seen. With that said, I don’t know a whole lot of guys who could beat him.
“Even that Conor, the reduced Conor, the worst Conor is one of the best guys in the world and that is where the compliment still exists for Dustin Poirier.”
Dustin Poirier is the baddest guy in the division
While McGregor had his problems, Poirier rose up and is now ready for a shot at the gold. Sonnen wasn’t of the thinking that a poor McGregor performance should take anything away from The Diamond.
“Dustin proved he is the baddest guy in the world at the hardest weight class to ever exist.”
Sonnen added that McGregor was in a bit of a tight spot in this clash and wasn’t used to all this pressure, hence he was keen on a trilogy with Poirier.
Poirier also believes that the UFC would be keen on doing it, and it is to be seen what happens next with the pair in the Lightweight division.
