Murphy started playing basketball during his high school days at Cary Academy. He was a star in his high school team and averaged 24.7 points with 7.4 rebounds per match in his senior season. On seeing his performance, various colleges approached him to join their team. Murphy decided to join Rice University by rejecting the offers from other colleges.
On seeing his capability, the team management made Murphy play all 32 games of the freshman season. In a match against UAB, Murphy set his career-high score of 24 points and shocked the NBA community. During his sophomore season, he played in 29 games of the 32 games Rice played. Using the transfer portal, Murphy transferred to Virginia University and resumed his junior year over there. The NBA scouts predicted him a top 45 draft picks if he enters the draft. At the end of his junior year, Murphy averaged 11.3 points with 3.4 rebounds per game.
Murphy decided to enter the 2021 NBA draft by skipping his senior year at Virginia. As the scouts predicted, he was drafted by the Memphis Grizzlies as the 17th pick in the 2021 NBA draft.
