Tottenham Opinion: Why Spurs must rekindle their interest in Ante Rebic?

Back in January, Eintracht Frankfurt forward Ante Rebic claimed that he would like a move to England as it suits his style of play.

Ante Rebic, 25, caught the eye last summer, following a superb World Cup campaign with Croatia. He starred for Croatia at the World Cup in Russia, helping his nation reach the final of the tournament before losing out to France.

Despite a lot of speculation surrounding him last term, Rebic stayed put at Frankfurt and helped the club finish seventh in the Bundesliga table.

The Daily Mirror reports that Tottenham were one of a host of clubs interested in the 2018 World Cup finalist last summer and were prepared to pay around £35million to sign him, only for Rebic to stay with Frankfurt.

The Croatian forward impressed this past term, bagging 10 goals and six assists in 38 games across all competitions. With Rebic expressing an interest to play in the Premier League, Tottenham now have the perfect chance to reignite their interest in the 25-year-old.

Mauricio Pochettino is eyeing reinforcements this summer after failing to sign a player in the last two transfer windows. Regardless of that, his team reached the Champions League final and finished in the top-four last term. But if Spurs are to realistically challenge for the Premier League title, they’ll need to back Pochettino in the transfer market.

The Argentinean tactician has an exciting starting XI, one that is capable of beating any team on their day. But what he lacks is depth in the squad and that is something he needs to add over the summer. One important area Pochettino should address is the strike department, with Harry Kane needing support and competition from next season.

Kane suffered an injury-hit 2018/19 campaign and while Fernando Llorente, who has been released by the club earlier this month—did very well, Tottenham need a more mobile, clinical option up front. In that regard, Rebic would be perfect for Spurs as he possesses the ability to play out wide or up front. He would suit the versatility that Pochettino will no doubt crave from any forward in his team, whilst also providing adequate cover for Kane.

A hard-working, aggressive and tenacious customer, the Croat operates with a lot of pace, power and flair and has the physical attributes that would help him quickly adapt to the demands of the Premier League. Moreover, he would provide something different to the Spurs attack, whilst posing a major threat on the counter-attack.

Verdict

At the age of 25, Rebic is yet to hit his peak, which makes him ideal for Tottenham. He has improved leaps and bounds in the last 18 months or so and under Pochettino’s tutelage, the Croatian international would be able to take his game to the next level.
