Tottenham Hotspur FC Opinion: Can Steven Bergwijn be a marquee signing?

According to ESPN, Tottenham Hotspur and Everton are keeping close tabs on Dutch international winger Steven Bergwijn, with Everton also keen on bringing the highly-rated 21-year-old PSV Eindhoven star to the Premier League.

The same report claims that manager Mauricio Pochettino wants to bolster his attacking options to challenge for the Premier League title next term and has shortlisted Bergwijn as a potential option.

Bergwijn has made eyeballs turn with his scintillating run of form in the Eredivisie this season, accumulating 11 goals and 12 assists from 24 appearances. Having represented the Netherlands at all youth levels upto U21, Bergwijn has also been capped twice at the senior international level.

The Eindhoven academy has always been renowned for bringing up world-class talents and Bergwijn is one of the latest academy stars to make a name for himself in the club’s first team.

The 21-year-old has established himself as one of the most sought-after young talents in the Eredivisie and a move to the Premier League seems likely to materialize for the talented winger next summer. Essentially a left-winger by trade, the Dutchman is also capable of playing out wide on the right.

Operating as a right-footed inverted winger down the left, Bergwijn excels with his pace, dribbling skills, quick feet, sharpness, agility and acceleration, beating the defenders to cut inside from the flanks and using his powerful right foot to test the goalkeeper.

He is also adept at holding on to the ball and tends to link up with his teammates with clever one-twos in and around the penalty area. Bergwijn also excels with his subtle movement and tactical intelligence, often making clever runs to draw the defenders out from their positions.

To put things into perspective, he would be an ideal signing for Tottenham Hotspur next summer, with the Lilywhites looking to bolster their attack.

The 21-year-old has all the makings of developing into a future star and Pochettino, with his ability to transform youngsters into world-beaters, should be able to bring the best out of him.

Spurs put up a brave challenge for the Premier League title this term but defeats against Chelsea and Southampton in recent games have left them vying for a top-four finish.

Although they have some top-quality players in the first-team, lack of depth and quality in their reserves have hit them hard in recent seasons. Spurs have the likes of Heung-Min Son, Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela as wide options but someone like Bergwijn, with his pace, eye for goal and quality on the ball, can be a potential game-changer from the bench.
