Why Tottenham signing Matias Vecino would bolster their midfield department

According to a report from the Daily Star, Tottenham have been offered an opportunity to sign Inter Milan midfielder Matias Vecino in the summer. The North Londoners were interested in the midfielder in January, but a move failed to materialize. Now, he is back on the market, with Spurs being offered a chance to snap him up. (h/t Daily Star)

The 28-year-old Vecino started out at Uruguayan club Central Espanol. Having made 32 first-team appearances for his boyhood club, the midfielder joined Club Nacional in 2011 and spent two years at the club, before moving to Italy, joining Fiorentina in January 2013.

During his time at the club, Vecino had loan spells out at Cagliari and Empoli. After 85 appearances for Fiorentina, the Uruguayan left for Inter Milan in 2017. Till date, he has featured 94 times for the Nerazzurri scoring 11 goals and setting up 6.

Tottenham need reinforcements after poor season

Tottenham have endured a poor 2019/20 campaign. Things haven’t improved a great deal since Jose Mourinho took over the reins from Mauricio Pochettino in November last year. Given the circumstances, it goes without saying that they need to strengthen their squad in the summer.

A new centre-forward and a centre-back should be a priority for Mourinho & co. But at the same time, bringing in another central midfielder would hold them in good stead moving forward.

Currently, the North Londoners have five options in the middle of the park, in the form of Harry Winks, Moussa Sissoko, Giovani Lo Celso, Tanguy Ndombele and loan signing Gedson Fernandes. Mourinho also has academy graduate Oliver Skipp.

But Ndombele’s future has been a subject of speculation heading into the summer, with the Frenchman failing to make the desired impact since his arrival last summer.

In addition, the likes of Fernandes and Skipp don’t have enough experience and exposure at the top level – something that Tottenham will need if they are to push for a top-four finish or even a title challenge next season.

Hence, bringing in someone of Vecino’s quality would be a wise move by the Londoners. The 28-year-old has accrued loads of top-level experience, having played in the Serie A for almost his entire career. In addition, the midfielder has been a constant fixture in the Uruguayan national team for a number of years now.

Vecino has been in good form in the 2019/20 campaign, chipping in with 3 goals and 1 assist in 23 matches for Inter Milan. None of the midfielders on Tottenham’s books currently have outscored the Inter Milan star.

Someone who can sit in and play as a No.6 or operate in a more box-to-box role, Vecino would add more options at Mourinho’s disposal. In addition, he would also be able to contribute goals from midfield, which would make him a valuable addition to the Tottenham squad.

Verdict

Tottenham, after a disappointing campaign till date, are in need of reinforcements across the pitch. While it seems like they have enough options in midfield, Ndombele’s poor season coupled with the inexperience of the likes of Fernandes and Skipp warrants the addition of another proven performer in the middle.

In that regard, Vecino would be a viable option for the Lilywhites. The Uruguayan is vastly experienced, has been in good form for Inter Milan. His arrival would boost the quality of the Tottenham squad, while also adding more depth.
