Why Tottenham signing Gian Marco Ferrari would be smart

According to 90min (h/t Football.london), Tottenham have set their sights on Gian Marco Ferrari as a summer transfer target. It is being said that Spurs and Mourinho are keen on adding a left-footed defender. This is despite signing Joe Rodon in the summer. A particular reason for pursuing another defender is Toby Alderweireld’s injury that would keep him out for a while.

A youth product of Parma, Gian Marco Ferrari joined their academy in 2000 and spent close to a decade in the youth levels. After that, he had loan spells at various other clubs such as Monticelli Terme, Crociati Noceto, Fiorenzuola and Renate.

He signed permanently for Crotone in 2015 and went on to make over 100 appearances for them. A year later he moved to Sassuolo but was loaned back to Crotone for another season. The following season, he was again loaned out, this time to Sampdoria where he made 31 appearances.

Currently at Sassuolo, the 28-year-old Italian has made 65 appearances, scoring 4 and assisting another 4. Ferrari was called up to the national team in 2018 but did not manage to get a game.

Tottenham can use an experienced player like Ferrari

Spurs had one of their best transfer windows in recent times as they managed to bolster key areas of the squad. Perhaps one area they left a bit to be desired is the central defence.

With Vertonghen and Foyth departing, it left the department a little light in terms of quality and quantity. They did manage to sign Joe Rodon from Swansea but he is too young to be starting games on a regular basis and is as a long-term prospect.

Now with Alderweireld out, Spurs look even lighter in that area with Ben Davies and Eric Dier having to play as makeshift center-backs. Then there is the case of Davinson Sanchez being out of favour under Mourinho.

All this points to the need for an emergency center-back signing and Gian Marco Ferrari could be the man to fit that role. A Serie A veteran and left footed, he is exactly what the club needs at this point. It is believed that Spurs aren’t willing to spend more than £15million in January for the signing and Ferrari can be signed within that amount.

While he might not be their first choice, he can certainly be a good signing to shore up the defence on a temporary basis. He is experienced, has the knack for an odd goal and can play on the left side of defence. Surely a player Spurs should pursue in January.
