Tottenham Opinion: Signing Andre Gomes will bolster the Spurs midfield

According to a recent report by English publication the Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy is said to be readying a bid in the region of £30m to try and lure Everton’s on-loan star Andre Gomes on a permanent basis next season.

The Barcelona man has spent the entire season on loan at Goodison Park and has impressed quite heavily whenever the opportunities have presented themselves. This means that Everton are quite reluctant to let their man move back to Catalonia.

With the Toffees seemingly extremely keen on the Portuguese star’s permanent commitment, Tottenham Hotspur could swoop in from behind and try and attract him with the promise of Champion League football – something that a club like Everton can never guarantee.

A graduate of the FC Porto youth academy, the youngster made the rather controversial switch to join Benfica a few years on. It was during his first loan spell at Valencia that he really made a name for himself in the Spanish league.

This is what urged the La Liga giants to make a move for the Portuguese star in the summer of 2015. Within a year after joining Valencia though, he was identified as a bright talent by the coaches at the Camp Nou only to be signed up by Barcelona in the summer of 2016.

After spending a couple of rather uneventful years at the Camp Nou, it was prior to the start of the current season that he realised that he needs more first-team action to really improve as a player.

Supremely gracious on the ball, he seems to glide across the pitch in possession and he also shows a knack of finding himself in the perfect spot to collect knock-downs and second balls. An excellent finisher too, Gomes is renowned for his commanding play in midfield.

Able to control the pace of the game with his passing and movement, he often opens spaces up for teammates with smart runs and also has the keen ability to pick out some exquisite passes from rather improbable distances well.

This season, he has scored a goal and assisted one too from his 24 league games for Everton. Despite his inspiring displays, he’s failed to really nail down a starting role in Marco Silva’s XI and this could be one of the main factors in his possible switch to North London in the summer.

Tottenham sold Moussa Dembele earlier in the campaign and this hasn’t gone down very well. The control he offered in the midfield area is now missing in the Spurs side and Andre Gomes has the perfect attributes to be his replacement. With Everton keen on his signature, Spurs will do well to sign him from under the Toffees’ nose.
