Eldrick Tont “Tiger” Woods is an American professional golfer.  Woods is widely regarded as one of the greatest golfers of all time and one of the most famous athletes in history. He was elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Woods was said to be a child prodigy who was introduced to golf before the age of two by his athletic father Earl Woods. In 1984 at the age of eight, he won the 9–10 boys’ event, the youngest age group available, at the Junior World Golf Championships. He then went on to win the Junior World Championships six times, including four consecutive wins from 1988 to 1991.

In 1994, Woods enrolled himself at Stanford University under a golf scholarship and won his first collegiate event, the 40th Annual William H. Tucker Invitational in September 1994.

Woods turned professional at age 20 in August 1996 and was subsequently named PGA Tour Rookie of the Year.

In 1997, he won his first major, the Masters tournament. He was also the youngest winner of the Masters at age 21. He then went on to win the Masters tournament in 2001, 2002, 2005 and 2019.

Woods won his first U.S. Open in 2000. He then again won U.S. Open in 2002 and 2008.

He also won his first The Open Championship in 2000. He then won it again two consecutive times, in 2005 and 2006.

In May 2019, following his 2019 Masters Tournament win, Woods was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Donald Trump. In 2009, Woods was named “Athlete of the Decade” by the Associated Press. He was named Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year a record-tying four times!

Born in Cypress, California, Woods is the son of Kultida Woods and Earl Woods. Wood’s father, Earl, was a retired U.S. Army officer and Vietnam War veteran. Her mother, Kultida, is originally from Thailand, where Earl met her when he was on a tour of duty there in 1968.

Woods has two half-brothers—Earl Jr. and Kevin—and a half-sister—Royce—from his father’s first marriage.

Woods also has a niece, Cheyenne Woods, who played for the Wake Forest University golf team and turned professional in 2012 when she made her pro debut in the LPGA Championship.
