Spurs Opinion: Lilywhites should beat Arsenal to sign Marcus Thuram

According to claims from French news outlet Le10 Sport, Arsenal have stepped up their interest in Guingamp forward Marcus Thuram.

Back in January, the Sun reported that Spurs and Manchester United were also monitoring the prolific French youth international who has been a revelation in the Ligue 1 this season.

Meanwhile, TEAMtalk has also linked the likes of Everton, Watford, Newcastle United and Southampton with an interest in the 21-year-old versatile striker.

Widely known as the son of former French star Lilian Thuram, Marcus Thuram has managed to carve out a reputation for himself with his consistently impressive performances in the French top flight this season.

The 21-year-old has racked up 11 goals and an assist from 29 appearances for a Guingamp side that have battled with relegation all season.

A youth product of Ligue 2 club Sochaux, Thuram rose to prominence with his boyhood club before signing for top flight club Guingamp in 2017.

Since then, he has taken his career to a different level and has attracted interest from some of Europe’s top clubs, registering 15 goals and 4 assists from 63 appearances in all competitions.

Arsenal stepping up their interest in the Ligue 1 starlet should set the alarm bells ringing in the Tottenham camp. With so many top clubs expressing their interest in Thuram, a summer move away from Guingamp looks likely to materialize for the youngster and Spurs need to show more intent in their pursuit if they are genuinely interested in the player.

Thuram is a player with massive potential and Spurs should look to have the final say over their north London rivals in this transfer saga.

Standing at 6ft.2 inches with a towering frame, Thuram is a technically-gifted versatile attacker who can play as a centre-forward and also out wide on the left as a wide-forward.

A fast and agile player noted for his pace, power and dribbling skills, Thuram likes to exploit the spaces down the flanks, combining his physicality with his blistering pace to cut inside and have a crack on goal.

His quick feet and good close control allow him to change directions in the blink of an eye, something which is a real asset for a player of his stature.

He is not only about pace, power, flair and athleticism, though, with his movement off the ball, fantastic aerial ability, eye for key passes and clinical finishing making him one of the hottest young prospects in French football.

As a matter of fact, Thuram is an excellent dribbler and has a wonderful record this season, having successfully completed 84 of his attempted 116 take-ons in Ligue 1. Furthermore, he has averaged 4 aerial duels, 1 key pass and 1.6 tackles per game, figures which reveal that he is a tenacious player who tracks back to help out his defenders as well.

To put things into perspective, versatile and talented Marcus Thuram should be an excellent signing for Spurs, with the Lilywhites on the lookout for alternatives to the regular duo of Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son up front.

Fernando Llorente and Vincent Janssen are expected to depart the club in the summer and Spurs should get the lacklustre duo off their books to bolster their attacking options with some young blood, having failed to sign a single new player since January 2018.
