Learn all about The Brood, one of WWE’s weirdest factions, and its members, history and more

The Brood was one of the most famous factions in WWE during their time in the Attitude Era in the late 1990s. The faction overpowered teams without any worries and were a danger in the entire roster. The team comprised of three members – Gangrel, Christian and Edge. Gangrel joined the WWE in 1998. He introduced the WWE Universe to Christian and convinced Edge to form the faction.

They all made their debut in 1998. The trio’s debuts came in the span of 3 months from June to September that year.

The Brood WWE History

The gimmicks of the trio was similar to clan of vampires, but were seen as living a “gothic lifestyle”. Their “blood baths”became popular: which involved the lights going out and returned with wrestlers covered in blood. The storyline introduced Christian as Edge’s brother. Even though, the reality was the pair were childhood friends, it boosted the storyline because of the pre-existing bond.

Gangrel also revealed why the faction was formed in an interview.

“They told me from day one it was to help bring Edge in and get him ready. They said he is our future and we are strapping a rocket to him. That was the deal. Edge brought in Christian. That was supposed to be the Chris Daniels spot.”

Gangrel was released in 2001. He would make a few more appearances in the WWE, before finally leaving in 2007. Christian and Edge, continued their singles run and went on to do exceedingly well in their careers. Currently, Christian moved to All Elite Wrestling, while Edge is set to face Seth Rollins at SummerSlam 2021.

Gangrel

Gangrel began his career in the late 80s with  Independent Professional Wrestling  and Stampede Wrestling. He made his debut in World Wrestling Federation in 1993.

The gimmick of the faction involved an entrance rising from a ring of fire, followed by a slow walk. With Christian and Edge, the faction was one of the famous factions at that time.

He also created The New Brood with Matt and Jeff Hardy, after turning on Edge and Christian. He was eventually released in 2001. WWE re-signed him multiple times but let him go in 2007.

Christian

Christian performed regularly for WWE from 1998 to 2005 and again from 2009 to 2014. He moved to other promotions like Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, before returning to WWE. He is a former ECW Champion and World Heavyweight Champion.

Christian even made an appearance in the 2021 Royal Rumble, after which he ended his long association with WWE. He decided to join All Elite Wrestling under the new name of ‘Christian Cage.’

Edge

Edge has won 31 Championships in his career. He is a former WWE and World Heavyweight Champion. He was forced to retire in 2011, due to many recurring neck injuries. Edge shocked the world when he returned at the 2020 Royal Rumble. Currently, he faced Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship at Money in the Bank.

The Brood breakup

The team re-aligned in mid-1999 after Edge and Christian were succeeding as a tag team. Gangrel turned his back on Edge and Christian, after he attacked them and ended the faction of the trio.

He eventually formed The New Brood with the Hardy Brothers, but then feuded with The Ministry. Eventually, the whole idea was cut off and they all went their seperate ways.
