From fans of superhero games to those who enjoy the quirkier and more classic games such as Super Mario, there were releases for all types of players. In fact, gaming insiders that it was one of the very best years for releases to date – and 2024 looks set to be even better.

So, let’s take a look at some of the very best games of 2023…

Alan Wake II

  • Platforms: Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC

This title was named Esquire’s Game of the Year – and was a huge hit. Alan Wake II takes the original cult survival game to the next level, offering a mind-bending horror experience perfect for next-generation consoles. 

The narrative unfolds as two detectives dig into ritualistic murders linked to a dream-like dimension called The Dark Place, similar to playing a Steven King novel. For fans of horrors, this is a must-play.

Spider-Man 2

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 not only allows players to experience the thrills of swinging around the city as Spider-Man, but it also includes a whole tapestry of the superhero’s history into one game. Insomniac’s sequel has to be one of the best Spider-Man games in years, combining superb storytelling with the fun of swinging through the city. For fans of superhero games, this is a super option!

Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon

Despite its somewhat complex title, Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon from the creators of Elden Ring is undoubtedly one of the fastest-paced and adrenaline-pumping games of the year. With seriously tough boss fights and all sorts of customisation options, this really is a thrilling experience where you can explore all different combinations.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder

There’s nothing quite like the legendary Super Mario games to get gamers excited… and this one does just that. Super Mario Bros. Wonder by Nintendo introduces even more innovative gameplay, and our hero, Mario, can even transform into an elephant! Featuring dynamic environmental changes and offering a whole new art style that works perfectly with Nintendo’s post-Mario Movie era, this is perfect for fans of the original title.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty

Hellboy: Web of Wyrd

It may well be that there are some gamers who were looking for more from Hellboy: Web of Wyrd, but real fans of the series will definitely appreciate the tweaks of its art style to a highly playable action rogue-like video game. The fact that the late Lance Reddick was included as Hellboy in one of his very last voice-acting roles adds even more to the game’s appeal.

Baldur’s Gate 3

This game pays homage to Dungeons & Dragons-style gameplay – and Baldur’s Gate 3 shows that putting in the time and effort to create something that is such a superb release is definitely worth the wait. Introducing turn-based combat for a tabletop experience, along with fun role-playing elements and its flexible quest system, this game offers players hours and hours of fun.

Bomb Rush Cyber Funk

Fans of the cult-classic roller skating game Jet Set Radio will certainly feel a rush of nostalgia when they try out Bomb Rush Cyber Funk. The game draws heavily from the art style and gameplay of the classic 2000s SEGA titles… especially the fast-paced graffiti gang skater theme. If you’re looking for a game to take you back in time, this is well worth a look.
