Nick Kyrgios came into the match on the back of some impeccable form. However, he narrowly lost the first set to the Polish tennis pro. In the second set, it was Kyrgios’ turn to edge out Hurkacz by the thinnest of margins. It all boiled down to the decisive third set and Hurkacz brought his A-game to the fore to drop just one game during the set and triumph over his opponent 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (5-7), 6-1.

This was Kyrgios’ first loss since becoming the runner-up at Wimbledon last month. During the tiebreak in the second set, Kyrgios had great luck on his side as he won a crucial point that could have easily gone the other way. The 27-year-old returned a drop shot from Hurkacz and the ball bounced on top of the net and landed on the latter’s court. Kyrgios apologized immediately after winning the point.
