The World No. 2 Alexander Zverev will miss the upcoming US Open Grand Slam as he has still not regained full fitness after tearing all three lateral ligaments in his right ankle during his French Open semi-final match against Rafael Nadal.

The German tennis pro is undoubtedly one of the best players at the moment. He was racing against time to get fit ahead of the US Open competition that is scheduled to begin on August 29.

Zverev underwent surgery in June. In mid-July, Zverev gave a positive update as he walked without the help of crutches.

Fans hoped that the talented player will return to Flushing Meadows. However, the 25-year-old will, unfortunately, miss the final major tournament of the year.

“Alexander Zverev has withdrawn from the US Open. Get well soon, Alex!” US Open organizers said in a brief statement.

Zverev had mentioned previously that he expected to be fit ahead of the Davis Cup in September where he will represent Germany. He added there was a glimmer of hope that he will return earlier and feature in the US Open.

Twitter reactions

Fans on Twitter sent in their messages of commiserations as Alexander Zverev pulled out of the US Open. He reached the finals of the competition in 2020. This would have been his 8th appearance at the tournament.
