World No.2 Naomi Osaka recently won the Laureus 2021 World Sportswoman of the Year
Japanese tennis sensation Naomi Osaka was overjoyed after winning the top women’s honour at the Laureus 2021 World Sports Awards.
The 23-year old has had an insane run in the last eight months, winning both the US Open 2020 and Australian Open 2021. She was named one of the 2020 Sports Illustrated Sportspersons of the Year, following her US Open 2020 victory.
Osaka had already been on a similar run before, when she won the US Open 2018 and the subsequent Australian Open 2019. But that was not enough to fetch her the Laureus sports award.
However, she has now got what she deserves, making her country proud.
Following her award win, Osaka took to Twitter posting a photo of herself holding the trophy in a sparkly white dress.
Osaka tweeted:
“Crazy times, we really won a Laureus.”
Usain Bolt congratulates Naomi Osaka on winning the Laureus
Lightning Bolt, the fastest man on the planet congratulated Osaka for her Laureus Award.
In a video shared by Laureus‘ official Twitter handle, the Jamaican sprint king can be seen acknowledging Osaka’s win, as he heaped praise on her for being a role model to a ton of female athletes all around the globe.
Bolt was quoted as saying:
“You are such a great role model for all the athletes and you show the woman athletes around the world what hard work and dedication can do.” [via Laureus Twitter]
An emotional Osaka then thanked Bolt for his wishes.
Osaka is just 23 and it looks like she will go a long way in stamping her authority as one of the tennis greats.
